Michael Gerard Tyson (June 30, 1966) is a retired professional boxer from the United States who competed from 1985 to 2005. In his early career, Tyson was known as “Iron Mike” and “Kid Dynamite,” and later as “The Baddest Man on the Planet,”. He is widely regarded as one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time. From 1987 through 1990, he was the undisputed world heavyweight champion.
He was the first heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles at the same time, and the only heavyweight to unify all three titles in the same fight. Tyson became the lineal champion the following year when he knocked out Michael Spinks in the opening round in 91 seconds. In one of the biggest surprises in boxing history, Tyson was knocked out by underdog Buster Douglas in 1990.
Tyson was recognized for his frightening and violent boxing technique, as well as his contentious behavior both inside and beyond the ring. He was placed 16th on The Ring magazine’s list of 100 greatest punchers of all time and first on ESPN’s list of “The Hardest Hitters in Heavyweight History” with an 88 percent knockout-to-win percentage. He was dubbed “probably the most savage boxer to ever go into a professional ring” by Sky Sports. He is a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
