About the “UNC” Air Jordan 6
Jordan Brand will release a new AJ6 UNC colorway in the early months of 2022, continuing to honor Michael Jordan’s alma mater, the University of North Carolina.
With the color of University Blue, White, College Navy, and Black, those were used to create the trademark UNC color blocking. Due to the University Blue nubuck base is accented with White leather overlays and Navy accents throughout. Then a woven jock tag embroidered on the heels sits over an ice transparent outsole to complete the look.
- Color: University Blue/White-College Navy-Black
- Style Code: CT8529-410
- Release Date: March 5, 2022
- Price: $210

History of the Air Jordan 6
The Beginning
What is it about the Air Jordan VI that makes it so special? Is it possible that the AJ 6 was worn during Michael Jordan’s first NBA championship? Or did he win his first NBA Finals MVP? Air Jordan VI 6. Maybe it’s the Air Jordan VI’s substance or design. Whatever the case may be, this is one sneaker to keep in mind.
Air Jordan 6 – A Spoiler
Tinker Hatfield made sure the Air Jordan VI had a reinforcement around the toe, making it the first basketball model to do so. Michael Jordan provided direct orders for a clean toe on the Air Jordan 6, so Tinker Hatfield made sure the Air Jordan VI had one. Because MJ had trouble putting on the previous five versions, Tinker created two holes on the top of the tongue and one loop on the rear, which he dubbed “a spoiler”.
The Jordan 6s Design
The transparent rubber sole debuted on the Air Jordan 6 for the second time. When the Air Jordan V was first introduced, several parents reported that their children were falling because the bottoms of the shoes would accumulate dust from the court, making them slippery. Tinker has now fitted a more firm rubber to the Air Jordan VI, ensuring that this problem does not occur again.
The AJ6 – First Molded Structure
The Jordan 6 was the first shoe with any form of molded construction on the back, since Michael wanted the heel tab to not strike his Achilles tendon. Tinker finished up by incorporating the number “23” into the shoe’s design. When the Air Jordan VI was first released in 1991, there were five colorways available, each costing $125.00. In 2000, three Air Jordan 6 models were re-issued for $120.00 each, and in 2002, three low-top versions were launched for $105.00 each. Jordan Brand produced a DMP, or “Defining Moments Package,” in 2005 that included the Air Jordan VI and XI. The retail price is $295.00.
The Air Jordan 6 Retro
Throughout the 2000s, Jordan Brand continued to release retros, particularly at the turn of the decade, when the shoe (and other related Jordan retros) were having a moment in pop culture, owing in large part to Kanye West and others. West, perhaps the most prominent guy in fashion and music at the moment, was frequently spotted wearing “Black/Infrared” Jordan VIs, and even wore them in the Watch the Throne album’s “Otis” video in 2011.
Jordan Brand took advantage of the opportunity and re-released the original Infrared pairs in 2010 (both black and white), but with a twist. For two 2010 releases, the brilliant Infrared would be replaced with a more conventional Team Red hue, a modest but significant shift for sneaker enthusiasts.
Final Word
The Air Jordan line had already reached the pinnacle of sports, fashion, and pop culture by 1991. The Jordan VI wasn’t so much a trailblazer as it was a torchbearer in terms of design. Thanks to a tried-and-true blend of creativity, flair, and on-court performance, it took a prospering line and kept it moving in the right way.
